Bates Wells and Braithwaite (BWB) traces its roots back to the early 1900’s, but the London office was founded in 1970 by Lord Phillips of Sudbury (Chancellor of Essex University). We are based opposite St Paul's in the heart of the City of London. BWB is a full-service city practice with a difference: we are widely regarded as the leading lawyers for public benefit and not-for-profit organisations. See the current edition of the Legal 500 published in September 2010 which places us in the undisputed UK wide top ranking for the non-for-profit sector. An independent Legal Directory described BWB as “City firm with a Conscience”.

We are also specifically rated for our work with “Education Institutions”; where we are ranked as being amongst the top six firms in the UK (The Legal 500 – September 2010).

The charge rates that we offer LUPC members are the most competitive we have ever provided. We estimate that the rates contained within our tender (see pages 9-11) will give LUPC members approximately 25% discounts on the most competitive rates we have ever offered in the past. Note we are also offering further substantial discounts on the first instruction, so that you can get to know the level of service we provide.

We are commercial lawyers, but approximately 60% of our billing is to public benefit and not-for-profit organisations. Because of this we have a cost structure that has to be inherently geared to providing value for money for our clients. We pride ourselves on giving robust practical advice, we pride ourselves on not sending a team when one lawyer is able to provide the advice required. We recruit excellent lawyers, often from major city firms, who are attracted by the BWB ethos and the unique client base that we can offer.

Clients rate our contribution to the sector and their businesses very highly. The most recent edition of Chambers UK quotes a client who says: "all its lawyers are authoritative experts, deeply committed and personally supportive of clients - their performance is consistently excellent."

With 170 staff and partners we are large enough to provide a complete range of commercial services but small enough to provide a personal service to every client.
