Today is an exciting day in the charity sector. After a 25 year gestation, the charitable incorporated organisation (“CIO”) is finally available, first for new charities and then for existing charities. Despite a few notable disadvantages, the introduction of a legal structure designed to suit charities’ needs is a most welcome development. It will be fascinating to see how the operation and regulation of CIOs works in practice. After years of waiting and months of preparation, here at BWB we are looking forward to being among the first to set up CIOs for a wide variety of clients.
