Event Summary

The skillset, commitment and constituency of a board's members make a vast difference to whether the board is high performing or not. What can a board do to attract good board members? What can it do to ensure that it can support them once they are recruited? Do personality styles make a difference when recruiting board members? This session will look at:

• Ways of undertaking skills audits;
• The impact of specialist skills, personality styles and diverse approaches;
• What the board can do to support new board members;
• Strategies for relationship management and building trust;
• How diversity can strengthen board performance;
• Resolving conflict, should it emerge;
• Ways of encouraging healthy board renewal.

Participants will be able to:

• Explore effective styles of leadership that will engender good behaviour in the board room;
• Look at practices that go beyond board composition and trustee duties to the way the chair presides over meetings, the nature of conversations, the relationships in the boardroom and the processes by which decisions are made;
• Consider conflict resolution strategies;
• Design a tool kit to ensure top quality board performance.

About the Speakers

Linda Laurance

Linda Laurance specialises in the provision of guidance on governance and on conflict management as a consultant and trainer, facilitator and mediator. She also acts as a mentor. She previously held a variety of posts in a wide range of organisations in the third sector, including those of Chair and Chief Executive.
Linda chaired the original Voluntary and Community Sector Code of Good Governance steering group, and the steering and implementation groups for the national occupational standards for trustees and management committees. Linda is currently vice chair and acting treasurer of EUConsult. She is a member of the Institute of Fundraising and a former member of its Standards Committee.

Linda is a CEDR (Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution) accredited mediator, and a member of Global Mediation’s mediator panel. She specialises in workplace and interpersonal dispute resolution, and facilitation of board strategy away days.

Tesse Akpeki

Tesse a consultant in leadership, management, governance and personal development and coordinates the OnBoard Programme. For 13 years she played a role in shaping the governance programme at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). A qualified lawyer, coach, facilitator, chartered secretary and mediator, she brings a practical slant to the work she undertakes. Working with over 1,000 voluntary and community organisations, she works nationally and internationally. She has authored over 20 governance books and blogs for Civil Society. In 2013, aspects of her work was published In You and Your NonProfit Board: Advice and Practical tips from the Field’s Top Practitioners, Researchers and Provocateurs. as part of a series commissioned by the Charity Chanel, internationally recognised capacity builders based in the USA. She has just written Governing with intent: An inquiry into trustee board effectiveness. Tesse served as non-executive director of West London Mental Health Trust from 2002 until 31 October 2009 and was a NED of a Community Trust Hospital between 1996 and 2002. She also served as a Commissioner at the Equal Opportunities Commission (2000-2003). She is currently a governor of International Students House, Chair of its Governance Advisory Committee, She specialises in relationship management for leaders, trustee boards and change management programmes. She has worked with a range of service delivery organisations, charitable trusts, arts organisations, sports organisations, infrastructure organisations, museums, theatres, professional bodies, corporate organisations, faith based organisations and local authorities. She is an NCVO approved consultant.
