Event Summary

Property Legacies: a practical guide to gifts of property left by Will including tips on protecting and maximising the property for your charity

This seminar will explore the key issues to think about in relation to gifts of property to your charity, as well as common issues that arise for our charity clients.

The event will be held at our new offices at 10 Queen Street Place, London EC4R 1BE from 3pm to 5pm (followed by drinks) on Tuesday 2nd February 2016, and will include:

  • The new inheritance tax residence nil rate band and what it means for charitable legacies
  • What to consider before accepting a gift of property
  • Making the most of property left by Will including: sale or redevelopment, capital gains tax and Charities Act compliance
  • Difficult issues such as dealing with property left for a purpose that cannot be met
  • Things to think about if your charity is left a future interest in property subject to a prior life interest and your charity’s obligations in the meantime
  • Dealing with third party challenges to your charity’s property legacy, with a particular look at proprietary estoppel in light of recent cases: what is proprietary estoppel and what effect can it have on gifts of property left by Will
  • Getting to grips with the terminology, such as permanent endowment and designated land and what that means in relation to holding and selling the property

We will finish with a Q & A session and well-earned drinks for our guests
