The new shared parental leave scheme will come into effect in 2015, introducing a new regime for maternity leave and pay.
Lucy McLynn explains that the new scheme could have some negative effects in the workplace, such as the potential to cause pressures on mothers to share their parental leave. It could also create dissatisfaction with their employers if they do elect to take their full quota of 52 weeks' leave personally, which is still their legal right.
