BWB’s Simon Steeden has been named in the 2015 Power Part Time List: a national roll call of the UK’s top 50 men and women who work in senior, business-critical roles, all on less than five days per week.
The 2015 Power Part Time List - now in its fourth year - is compiled annually by Timewise to create more role models, debunk the myth than you cannot work a top level job on a part time basis and change the conversation from what is perceived as impossible when working flexibly, to what is possible.
Timewise conducted the nationwide call to action for nominations from June, calling upon the public to nominate inspirational individuals they knew, who work part time or flexibly at senior levels. After receiving a record number of nominations since the list’s launch in 2012, the judges compiled a list of 50 deemed to be the most outstanding. The list is not ranked or numbered in any way.
Simon is a partner in BWB’s charity and social enterprise department. He has particular expertise in campaigning and election law, social and community finance, cross-border charitable activity and philanthropy.
As a director of Friends of the Earth and head of the firm’s environmental group, Simon has a particular interest in advising environmental organisations. He has also provided constitutional and structuring advice to the Green Party of England & Wales.
As joint-head of the firm’s electoral and political activities team, Simon advises a wide range of household name campaigning organisations on electoral law compliance and is currently advising Lord Hodgson’s team on its independent statutory review of the rules applying to election campaigning by non-parties.
He was selected as a Super Lawyer for charity law advice in 2014 by Super Lawyers Magazine and selected as a “charity star under 35” by Charity Finance magazine.
Simon began working part time to enable him to look after his daughter Coco, now four years old and at school. Simon’s wife Gail has her own successful career as a director and head of social purpose consulting at Flamingo, a market leading global insight and brand consultancy. Simon and Gail are now expecting twins.
Timewise co-founder Karen Mattison MBE led the judging panel which included:
• Lynn Rattigan, Chief Operating Officer of EY, UK & Ireland
• Andrew Saunders, the deputy editor of Management Today magazine
• Karen Blackett OBE, Chief Executive Officer of MediaCom UK
• Katie Bickerstaffe, Chief Executive Officer of Dixons at Dixons Carphone plc, UK & Ireland
• Sally Bundock, presenter for BBC World Business Report
• Patrick Foley, Chief Economist at Lloyds Banking Group
• Andrew Porter, Head of Talent Engagement of Diageo
Simon said, “I hugely appreciate how supportive BWB has been to me in this area and so I try to reflect that in the work I do with others. I hope to be an example for others at BWB, particularly other men thinking of taking up the great new opportunities offered by shared parental leave. I hope that trailblazers such as BWB, the UK’s first law firm to become an accredited B Corp, can be an example for other companies to continue the normalisation of a more equal approach to the sharing of parental responsibilities.”
Karen Mattison said, “Simon and the other 49 individuals represent how work in the UK is changing. Part time working has reached a tipping point, and this year’s Power Part Time list is testament to this – with more entries than ever and – crucially – more men than ever. Part time and flexible working has moved from the sidelines to the centre stage. The world of work has changed, and our List tells the story of the incredible people who are shaking up the status quo.”
