Laura has extensive experience advising a range of clients on general charity law, governance and structuring matters. Laura has notable experience in advising on technical charity law issues and structures including complex charitable trusts, major gifts and endowments, schemes and property-holding structures. Laura leads the firm’s expert Trusts & Legacies group. Laura was a member of the Charity Law Association working party which responded to the Law Commission’s paper on “Technical Issues in Charity Law” and lead on BWB’s own submission to the consultation which addressed a number of key issues and made proposals that will have a particular impact on charities governed by Act of Parliament or Royal Charter.

  • Advised SOAS (School of Oriental & African Studies), University of London, in relation to a £20 million donation from the Alphawood Foundation in Chicago. One of the biggest gifts ever to a UK University, Alphawood's donation provides £15 million for an ambitious programme to advance the study and preservation of Southeast Asian art - including funding three academic posts and over 80 scholarships, and £5 million towards SOAS’ building redevelopment in Bloomsbury
  • Advising a charity governed by Royal Charter in relation to a review of its Charter and amendment of its Bye-Laws
  • Review of structure governing charity established by Act of Parliament and advice on the scope of its powers
  • Obtaining scheme to reorganise and amalgamate three charities established in 1800s
  • Advising on incorporation of museum charity with heritage assets
  • Advising in relation to endowment funds including setting up endowment funds and advising on permanent endowment issues, including release of permanent endowment
