Steven is an Associate in the Public & Regulatory team and a qualified barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. Having trained and qualified in the commercial litigation department at a top Auckland-based firm, he transferred to a specialist litigation firm where he worked in the financial regulatory team, acting for large government regulators and private clients. He also acted as a Crown prosecutor in criminal jury trials, and was classified as an Intermediate Crown Prosecutor in 2016. Steven has commercial litigation, financial regulatory services, insurance, and government inquiry experience. He has recently worked for the British Council in response to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse.

Examples of Recent Work

  • Advised the British Council in its preparations for the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse;
  • Acted for a government regulator in its investigation of major banks for the sale of derivative products to farmers during the Financial Crisis;
  • Advised a large Auckland electricity provider on a Ministerial inquiry into a power outage affecting 80,000 consumers;
  • Acted for a government regulator in the first market manipulation civil proceedings to proceed to trial in New Zealand.
