Designing your board to achieve high performance
Diverse boards make better decisions, so why are a majority of boards not diverse?
In November 2017, the Charity Commission published ground-breaking research into awareness and effectiveness of trusteeship in England and Wales. It recommended that charities do more to promote diversity on their boards and encourage applications from women, young people and people from ethnic minority and socially diverse backgrounds. One of the key findings is that 71% of trustees are recruited through an informal process.
With the Charity Governance Code and the Taken on Trust report (2017) emphasising the importance of recruiting and retaining a diverse board that leads effectively and achieves high performance, this session addresses how this can be achieved.
Drawing on Principle 5 (Board Effectiveness) and Principle 6 of the Charity Governance Code, this session will explore the following:
- Critical components for strategic diversity;
- Making the case for an engaged and diverse board;
- The role and expectations of the chair in supporting diversity in governance;
- The mix of skills, perspectives, experiences and mind sets to enhance diversity on the board;
- Identifying good practice in board recruitment, selection and board reviews to support cognitive diversity;
- Cultural competencies and capabilities - Assessing soft skills and cultural fit;
- Cultural competencies reflection and renewal;
- Operating in an environment where diversity is celebrated and impact increased;
- Reviewing accepted norms and practices to remove barriers and sustain diversity; and
- The diversity governance audit and monitoring board diversity objectives.
What participants will get from attending this session:
- Steps charities can take to promote and achieve diversity on their board;
- Identifying any barriers or obstacles to achieving and retaining diversity on the board;
- Practical tools, techniques and ideas that can help recruitment and selection processes; and
- Ways of addressing conscious or unconscious bias (e.g.: applying the Rooney rule).
