Along with a number of other data protection experts (including professors and business groups), Lucas’s comments were published as part of a debate on whether social media companies should “have the right to sell our data because we use them for free”.
In response to this question, Lucas argues that “we do not face a binary choice between fury and acceptance; and social media use is not really ‘free’ – advertising and data sharing revenue makes it worthwhile for platforms like Facebook”.
He goes on to explain how “the more pertinent issue is whether multinational behemoths like Facebook can be obliged, in practice, to use our data in a lawful manner”.
