Bates Wells’ Charity & Social Enterprise (CHaSE) practice group has been recognised as the legal sector’s leading charity team by this year’s Charity Finance legal survey.

The survey, which was compiled following a rigorous research process, assessed the size and effectiveness of the sector’s top charity teams in a range of areas. Organisations surveyed in this year’s study were judged according to a wide range of metrics such as the total number of large charity clients that each firm represents, each firm’s directory rankings and the number of lawyers advising full-time on charity work.

Aside from statistical analysis of CHaSE, the report’s authors also ran extensive commentary from Philip Kirkpatrick, Deputy Managing Partner and Head of Charity at Bates Wells.

Referring to the fact many charities have faced “some of the most challenging of times in recent years”, Philip explained that “it is not enough to know the law. In order to be effective lawyers must also understand the charity sector and relevant policy issues. It is also crucial to understand the thinking of relevant regulators, whether that is the Charity Commission, the ICO, Care Quality Commission, Ofsted or Electoral Commission.”
