Benjamin Thomas, Solicitor in Bates Wells’ Charity & Social Enterprise team, has written for Law in Sport on the key considerations sports clubs should bear in mind when weighing up whether to establish charitable foundations.

With charitable foundations now an increasingly large part of the charities landscape across the UK, sports clubs need to ask themselves a number of important questions before they decide whether or not a foundation is appropriate for them.

Ben notes in his article that “what is clear is that a charitable foundation is not something which should be established on a whim, and requires significant care and attention to navigate the charity law landscape.”

Ben’s piece poses a range of specific questions clubs should consider, goes into detail about why a foundation may or may not be suitable for them and explains the practical steps which charity heads need to take if they do indeed decided to establish a foundation.
