Alistair is a solicitor in the Public & Regulatory team, and assists with matters across their practice. Having joined BWB from a regulator, Alistair worked first as a paralegal and then as a trainee specialising in public law. He has worked with a range of public bodies, regulators, charities and social enterprises, and private sector bodies. As well as advising in relation to general public law matters (including judicial review), Alistair has assisted in matters involving local government law (particularly public audit), freedom of information and data protection, public rights of way, and regulatory law.

  • Assisting with advice on public rights of way, including as part of a team bringing a judicial review in the High Court, and representing a client in a Magistrates’ Court costs hearing
  • Advising a public body on its powers to issue statutory and non-statutory guidance
  • Advising a number of clients on data protection queries, including in relation to fundraising, data breaches, and a review of a public body’s data protection policies
  • Drafting pre-action correspondence on behalf of a third sector client threatening to bring judicial review (due to a flawed consultation), resulting in the reconsideration of the relevant decision
  • Working with public bodies and auditors involved in the audit of local government bodies, both in connection with the local audit statutory framework and substantive issues arising from local government decision making
  • Assisting with advice for a new regulator on its functions and duties
  • Involvement in public law litigation including judicial review, statutory appeal and appeal by way of case stated
  • Advising a number of clients on the application of the reporting requirements under the Modern Slavery Act 2015
  • Providing training on judicial review
