Bill advises on all aspects of taxation affecting charities (VAT, PAYE, corporation tax) with a 34 year career that has included HMRC, big 4 accountants, industry, and for the last 21 years he has specialised in charities. As a result he can provide advice in the round covering all aspects of a transaction or an issue. Typical work undertaken includes:

  • reviewing the VAT structure of charities
  • advice on VAT & property construction and property leases
  • advice concerning PAYE taxes, PAYE investigations, expenses policies, and employed/self-employed status issues
  • gift aid reviews and gift aid audits
  • corporation tax and charities
  • making use of tax exemptions, use of trading subsidiaries
  • general VAT and income tax issues affecting businesses, charities, and individuals.
  • tax and immigration/emigration for individuals

Examples of recent work

  • Resolving HMRC gift aid audit for a major visitor attraction charity. HMRC argued on the grounds of a technicality that gift aid rules had not been met and that all gift aid should be repaid but their guidance was found wanting and so they dropped the enquiry.
  • VAT advice concerning various funding agreements from government and local government organisations
  • Writing a staff expenses policy for a medical research charity
  • Dealing with HMRC VAT enquiries concerning a telecoms company and a charity working in the telecoms field to ensure that VAT recovery was not compromised
  • Tax advice to various UK resident foreign nationals
  • Advice to various academies on VAT
  • Helping numerous charities and schools on maximising VAT reliefs on construction projects. This included restructuring the provision of training and overnight accommodation to ensure all the VAT on multi million pound construction project could be recovered.
  • Advising a nationwide education charity on the tax and VAT effects of its restructure and changes of premises

  • Over 30 years’ experience working in tax
  • Lancaster University, BA (Hons) English
  • H M Revenue & Customs, 1985-1988
  • PriceWaterHouseCoopers (PwC), qualified ATT, 1988
  • Part-time at commercial organisations, then Scope, then The Charities Aid Foundation, and now RNIB since 1998
  • Part-time at Bates Wells Braithwaite since 2002
