Experience

Jess is a solicitor in the Dispute Resolution and Charity & Social Enterprise teams, specialising in advising on governance and other disputes, general regulatory matters, constitutional issues and charity law compliance for charities and non-profit organisations. Jess has particular experience in election and campaigning law, including the regulation of campaign finance, content and tactics, campaigning and political activity by charities, regulation of lobbying, strategic litigation, election-specific court applications and regulatory investigations regarding campaigning and election rules.

  • Acting for a major arts charity in a governance dispute and related matters;
  • Acting to resist an application for judicial review of a regulatory body and substantive judicial review proceedings focussing on EU consumer protection law;
  • Advising a regulatory body as to application of the law and its regulatory framework to a number of its more complex investigations;
  • Acting for a large consumer electronics company in relation to a contractual dispute in the context of administration of a supplier;
  • Advice to a range of public, private and charitable bodies on regulation, funding and campaigning during the snap 2017 general election campaign
  • Advice to the designated Remain campaign during the EU Referendum, Britain Stronger in Europe
  • Advice regarding Charity Commission compliance investigations/visits
  • Advising on Electoral Commission investigations
  • Advising an Islamic charity regarding allegations in the media and a resulting Charity Commission investigation
  • Advising a statutory office holder on governing legislation and procedural requirements
  • Assisting a participant in an independent inquiry
  • Advising a US non-profit on its options for incorporating in the UK as a charity or social enterprise
